Recently Mr Rob Canning and Ms Cathy Barrett attended the largest Religious Education Conference in theworld in Los Angeles with 12 other representatives from Brisbane Catholic Educaiton. They were almost forty thousand participants at this three-day event which included a Liturgy, Mass, keynote speakers and practical workshops presented by the finest theologians, spiritual directors and liturgists in the world.
Highlights of the Congress included the presentation by Sr Helen Prejean (an avid campaigner against the death penalty in the United States), whose story was portrayed in the film Dead Man Walking, a keynote by Fr Ron Rolheiser on the restlessness of the spirit, and a workshop on Leadership and Social Justice…how schools can change our world. Cathy sang along with Marty Haugen in a workshop called Laudato Si Singing the Canticle of Creation with Francis, and Rob was moved by the presence of the Holy Spirit through the congregation and music in the beautiful Masses and Prayer.
Rob and Cathy agreed that Franciscan spirituality was evident throughout their journey: firstly at the ruins of the Franciscan Mission at San Juan del Capistrano, in the tapestries on the walls of the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels and in the work of the artists in the Exhibition Halls. There is no doubt that what they learned will greatly benefit their work at the College, in the Parish, and the Logan Community.
