From student to teacher coming full circle at St Francis College

For early career teacher Symone Bakker, 2025 marks a special milestone as she returns to St Francis College Crestmead not just as a teacher, but as a Prep teacher in the very same building where she began her own schooling journey 20 years ago.

Inspired by her own Prep teacher Miss Day, Symone knew from a young age that she wanted to teach.

“Prep is such an important year where children begin to discover how they learn, connect with others and grow into confident learners," Symone said.

“It was in Miss Day's classroom that I first developed the confidence and curiosity that now guide my own teaching."

In the lead up to World Teachers' Day, we're celebrating the dedication that our educators like Symone bring to their classrooms every day.

Symone's connection to St Francis College runs deep, having attended the school right through to Year 12.

“To come back and continue my journey as a teacher at the College and give back to the community that gave me so much, has been a real privilege," she said.

Now in her first year of teaching Prep, Symone is embracing the challenges and joys of the role.

“I get to give absolutely everything every day, and the children give everything they can back - growing in ways that constantly amaze me," Symone said.

“Each student's day can look different, but with the right support, they all find their path to success."

Symone has always loved the St Francis community, sharing the same passion for building positive relationships and fostering a safe space for students who need it most.

College Principal John Marinucci said Symone represents the best of what early career teachers bring to the profession.

“Symone's dedication and commitment to her students, and to her own professional growth, have seen her students thriving," John said.

“We are so proud of the St Francis community and it's always a great pleasure to have students who attended the school come back and work here in any capacity."
